Police root out cannabis grow after making drug-drive arrest

A cannabis grow was discovered after officers searched a property linked to a suspected drug-driver.

Two response officers asked colleagues to search the address after arresting a driver in Chadwick Road, Bobbers Mill, on Tuesday afternoon (18 February).

They’d stopped the driver due to the manner of his driving and arrested him after he failed a drugs wipe test.

A large bag of cannabis was also found inside the car. As such, the 30-year-old was arrested on suspicion of drug-driving and possession with intent to supply a Class B drug.

Following inquiries at the scene, the officers arranged for two properties to be searched, along with a second vehicle parked outside one of the addresses.

One of the properties was in nearby Noel Street, with officers finding a large cannabis grow spread over the first floor, second floor and attic. There were approximately over 200 plants in the address of varying maturity and the electricity had been bypassed – posing a fire risk.

The other property was in Chadwick Road, a short distance away from where the driver was arrested. No drugs were found but officers seized a quantity of cash and an iPhone that will now be examined as part of the investigation. 

Further quantities of cannabis were found in the car parked outside, along with suspected Class A drugs.

The discoveries led to the arrests of three further people on suspicion of committing drug offences. They included a 27-year-old man and two women aged 24 and 50.

PC Dan Bird, one of the response officers who made the initial arrest, said:

“This was a great result and demonstrates why we stay attentive when out on routine patrols.

“I hope the positive action taken in this instance reassures the public that we are fully committed to making our roads safe and tackling drug-related crime.
