Police Registration 2020/2021

Update 31st December 2020

Nottinghamshire has been placed in tier 4 restrictions, therefore with immediate effect all non-essential services, including overseas registrations are being suspended. This will not affect applications for new or extended visas or your ability to return to your home country.

If you already have an appointment please do not attend it, we will be in touch with you to cancel and again to rearrange when restrictions are lifted.

Police registrations will resume from 3rd December 2020. (Updated 25/11/2020)

14 days quarantine after arriving in the UK is to be prioritised over the need to register/update. Please do NOT attend Police Registration appointments within the quarantine period. Information about your need to quarantine can be found on the government website

  • If you had an appointment cancelled due to the national lockdown, we will be in touch soon with a new appointment
  • If you have already paid for your registration please keep the payment confirmation as this will still be valid when we are able to resume

Who needs to register?

If you're entering the UK for more than 6 months, and you are a national of one of the following countries, it is very likely that you must register with the police:

Your UK Entry Clearance visa, Biometric Residence Permit or your decision letter from the British Embassy will clearly state if you're required to register or not.

  • UK Entry Clearance visa - if it includes 'Pol Reg', Police Registration' or similar, you must register within 7 days
  • British Embassy decision letter - if your letter states 'You are required to register with police', 'You and any dependents aged 16 or over must now register with police', (or something similar, wording may vary), you must register within 7 days.

First time Police Registration

Once you have collected your BRP and checked that you definitely need to register with the police, please email  ovro@nottinghamshire.pnn.police.uk, including your full name, date of birth, UK address, nationality and a contact telephone number and one of our dedicated team will book an appointment for you and send all the relevant information and forms needed.

Please do not send repeated emails as this will slow down the system for all applicants. You will receive an automatic reply confirming that we have your details and will reply to you in due course.

We can ONLY register people who live in Nottinghamshire (or students living on the University of Nottingham, Sutton Bonnington Campus). If you reside outside of Nottinghamshire you will need to register with the force where you live.

Updating an existing Police Registration Certificate

If you have registered with the police before and still have your Police Registration Certificate, you must update your certificate within 7 days for any of the following changes:

  • Change of address
  • New Visa/BRP
  • New Passport
  • Marriage
  • Birth of children
  • Travel outside the UK for more than 8 weeks (with intention to return)

Further information

If you lose your certificate – It is your responsibility to report this to the Police immediately. DO NOT send your passport to the Home Office before you have paid for and collected your replacement certificate from the Police Station as this could result in serious delays which may affect your application.

If you leave the UK on a temporary basis (i.e. to travel home during mid-term) please have your Certificate of Registration with you when passing through Immigration Control.
