Police issue shocking crash footage to highlight drink driving dangers

“You are very lucky you did not kill someone - either yourself, your passenger or an innocent bystander.” 

This was told to drink driver Lindami Mremi after shocking CCTV footage showed his car lift into the air and crash at speed into the frontage of a house. 

Nottinghamshire Police has now issued CCTV footage of the crash, and body worn video camera footage showing the aftermath and damage caused, to help highlight the dangers of drink driving. 

It comes as the force is continuing to raise awareness of the risks and consequences of drink and drug driving as part of its ‘A Deadly Mix’ campaign, by using a mixture of public engagement, education, and enforcement to keep roads safe in the city and county. 

Nottingham Crown Court heard how Mremi had earlier been to a bottomless brunch with friends and wrongly thought if he kept eating through the evening that it would absorb the alcohol he’d had and that he would be under the legal drink-drive limit. 

It was a misconception which could have easily resulted in the loss of life – as the 22-year-old crashed at speed onto the driveway of a home in Robin’s Wood Road, Aspley, during the early hours of 17 June 2023. 

The Fiat Punto suffered serious damage and more than £4,500 worth of damage was caused as a result of Mremi’s dangerous drink driving. 

Police were called and arrested Mremi after he provided a positive roadside breath test reading of 81 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35mcg. 

Mremi was taken to hospital as a result of the collision and analysis of a blood sample showed he had 131 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit is 80mg. 

Mremi, of Newmarket Road, Bulwell, was subsequently charged and went on to plead guilty to drink driving, dangerous driving and a Bail Act offence. 

He appeared at Nottingham Crown Court for sentencing on Wednesday (11 December). 

The court heard that Mremi borrowed a friend’s car, insured himself and decided to drive home that night following the bottomless brunch – mistakenly thinking he was fit to drive and under the limit. 

Recorder Richard Davis said: “You are very lucky you did not kill someone - either yourself, your passenger or an innocent bystander. You were driving at speed and you were impaired through consumption of alcohol. 

“It’s very fortunate that no-one was hurt. Do not underestimate the seriousness of drinking and driving, particularly in this season of the year. You have an awful lot of growing up to do quickly. 

“You have a kid on the way who you need to look after. You are clearly intelligent enough to run your own business.

"I am going to put this down as a complete misjudgement that can never happen again." 

Mremi was given a 24-week prison sentence, suspended for 18 months, and a 12-month driving ban. He must also pay £1,800 compensation and complete up to 20 rehabilitation activity requirement days. 

Detective Inspector Steven King, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Drink or drug driving is completely unacceptable.

"As a force, our work is very much ongoing to prevent and reduce this risk on our roads as well as catching and prosecuting those who break the law and put innocent people’s safety at risk as well as their own.

“Lives are destroyed by drink-driving. We hope by releasing the shocking footage in this case that people will think twice before deciding to drive while under the influence of alcohol. The next time they decide to do so could be their last.”
