Jail for domestic abuser who strangled ex and stabbed man

A domestic abuser strangled his former partner and stabbed another man she was with after turning up at her home.  

Tyler Ackerley had already subjected the woman to a longstanding campaign of abuse before deciding to launch the attack.

Despite no longer being in a relationship with the woman, Ackerley showed up at her house and then flew into a jealous rage.

Having picked up a knife from the kitchen, the 26-year-old lunged at the other man with the weapon and stabbed him in the shoulder.

He then turned his attention to his ex – who he started strangling – before finally fleeing from the scene when he heard police sirens in the distance.

The woman was left with facial injuries following the attack in Worksop on 2 July this year, while the man was treated in hospital for a single stab wound.

As well as divulging to the officers in attendance what had happened, the woman also revealed former partner Ackerley had subjected her to years of abuse before that too.

Ackerley was responsible for a campaign of controlling and coercive behaviour against the woman – between 2020 and 2025 – that left her fearing for her safety.

Threats of violence were used to enforce a catalogue of abuse, which included him stopping his victim from seeing her friends and family and deciding what clothes she could wear.

Ackerley was tracked down and arrested by police soon after the attack in July, but initially denied the charges put to him.

However, with a trial date imminent and with detectives having gathered extensive and overwhelming evidence against him, Ackerley changed his tune.

He would eventually plead guilty to causing grievous bodily harm, intentional strangulation, and engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour.

Ackerley, of Burns Road, Worksop, appeared at Nottingham Crown Court on Monday (8 December), where he was jailed for four years and three months.

He was also made the subject of a ten year restraining order banning him from contacting the woman in any way or visiting her address.

Detective Sergeant Rachel Mayfield, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“Tyler Ackerley is a violent and manipulative man who, put simply, belongs behind bars.

“He subjected a man and woman to what I can only imagine was a terrifying ordeal when he showed up unannounced at his victim’s home.

“Having grabbed a knife and stabbed the man once to the shoulder, he proceeded to strangle the woman too – only releasing his grip when he heard incoming police sirens.

“It wasn’t until Ackerley had fled the scene that the full list of his crimes emerged however, and we realised he was responsible for a longstanding campaign of domestic abuse.

“He subjected his former partner to a catalogue of controlling and coercive behaviour that lasted more than five years.

“It’s to her credit and bravery that she felt able to share her experiences with us, which helped pave the way for the prison sentence that Ackerley has now received.

"This was also made possible thanks to the efforts of DC Amelia Hicklin and the rest of the investigative team, whose excellent work left Ackerley with no option but to plead guilty because of the overwhelming evidence against him."
