Drunk thug behind Newark GBH is locked up

A drunk thug who knocked a man unconscious in Newark town centre has been jailed.

Silas Briggs-Price decided to pick a fight with a couple within seconds of leaving a pub.

A confrontation suddenly developed as all three left the Barnby Gate-based pub at closing time.

Briggs-Price at that point got in the faces of the man and woman and started jumping up and down aggressively.

When the duo tried to walk away, the 22-year-old continued to follow them, while shouting ‘do you know who I am?’

Without any provocation, Briggs-Price then punched the man in the face – knocking him unconscious on the ground.

Despite his victim having no way of defending himself, the attacker still decided to inflict a running kick to his head.

The assault – in the early hours of 27 June last year – left the man with several facial fractures.

Having caused those injuries, Briggs-Price also assaulted the woman, before removing his shirt and storming off.

A now-topless Briggs-Price was found walking through the town centre minutes later by police officers, who duly arrested him.

Despite initially denying being involved, the weight of CCTV evidence available later prompted the attacker to change his tune.

Having admitted to causing grievous bodily harm with intent and assault, he was sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court on Monday (23 February).

Briggs-Price, of Coronation Street, Balderton, was jailed for four years.

Detective Constable Robert McGhee, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“Briggs-Price’s behaviour that morning was dangerous, senseless and disgraceful in equal measure.

“Having just left the pub, he took it upon himself to aggressively pursue a couple down the street following a confrontation. Despite them trying to leave, he simply wouldn’t let it go.

“After knocking the man unconscious, the actions that followed were incredibly cowardly, as he kicked his now-defenceless victim in the head before assaulting the woman too.

“The responding officers did a great job in tracking Briggs-Price down so quickly, with the attacker spotted walking the streets with his shirt off only a few minutes later.

“Having gathered all the available footage, we were then able to build a strong case against him that left him with no option but to plead guilty to GBH with intent.

“Briggs-Price’s actions left a man with serious injuries, so we’re pleased to see he’s now received a custodial sentence befitting of his offending.”
