Prolific thief jailed after two-week crime spree

A prolific thief who committed more than 20 thefts at shops in Newark during a two-week crime spree has been locked up. 

Luke Rawstron stole hundreds of pounds of goods after targeting stores between 31 May and 15 June. 

The 35-year-old helped himself to food and drink, laundry and washing up products as well as other items including two hoovers and a barbecue during his offending. 

Incidents were clearly captured on CCTV cameras and Rawstron, of no fixed address, was quickly identified. 

Inquiries were carried out which led to him being arrested, interviewed and charged. 

Rawstron pleaded guilty to 22 thefts. Among the affected premises were five different Co-op stores in Newark, Holland and Barrett in Stodman Street and Asda in Lombard Street. 

He also pleaded guilty to using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour towards a Co-op worker who challenged him about payment for items on 14 June. 

Rawstron became aggressive towards the staff member and shouted threats which caused him to fear that violence would be used. He then left the store without paying for goods. 

In addition, Rawstron pleaded guilty to a charge of burglary which he committed at the Greggs shop in Market Place during the early hours of 8 May. After breaking in he stole a bottled drink before leaving the store. 

Rawstron appeared at Nottingham Magistrates' Court for sentencing on Wednesday (17 June) and was jailed for 12 months.  

Inspector Charlotte Ellam, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “The impact of theft and burglary on local businesses can be severe and far-reaching which is why we treat all reports seriously. 

"Clearly, Rawstron had no regard whatsoever for local businesses, their staff or the consequences of his actions.

"I'm pleased he's now been taken off our streets, sparing local stores from any further loss and distress. 

"We recognise the important role that policing plays in tackling offenders like him as well as supporting retailers in reducing the number of offences committed and in keeping their staff safe.

"We will continue our relentless work to tackle these issues and identify and locate prolific and persistent offenders like Rawstron and bring them to justice.”
