Depending on how you prefer to learn, your experiences and your qualifications, there are several routes available to you to join us as a police constable.
This is a two-year training programme which blends classroom learning with practical scenarios. The training provided is based on the national policing curriculum and focuses on preparing you for a hands-on policing role.
Programme plan:
Your first six months consists of classroom learning to understand the law, specialist policing knowledge and the skills to be an officer. After six months you'll get to celebrate stepping out onto the frontline with a formal pass out parade at our Headquarters
For the next ten weeks you’ll be under the tutorship of an experienced officer, learning how to apply the theory learnt from the classroom in practical scenarios out in public
The following 18 weeks you’ll be out on independent patrol to continue developing your confidence in an operational policing role
You’ll then join the prisoner handling team to learn how to safely manage detainees and understand the custody process
You’ll then join response to learn how to handle fast-paced frontline policing, responding to several incidents and making quick decisions under pressure
You’ll then join the neighbourhood policing team to learn how to build strong community relationships, prevent crime through visibility and engagement and work closely with local partners and residents to improve neighbourhood safety
After two years, you will qualify as a police constable. After those two years you can then decide if you would like to progress into other specialist areas
You must be 18 years of age to apply but you can be 17 at the time of your application as long as you are 18 by the time you are appointed
You must hold two A Levels or a Level 3 qualification in any subject (a Level 3 qualification includes a national diploma, a Level 3 NVQ, or an access to higher education diploma)
Or have relevant quantifiable experience to the role of police constable (conditions apply)
Or are a current serving PCSO who has passed your probationary period and served 12 months in post
Or are a current serving special constable who has attained independent patrol status at the time of your application
You need to hold a full UK driving license (manual)
You must be a UK, EU citizen with EU settled status, a commonwealth citizen or a foreign national with no restrictions on your stay
You must have lived in the UK for the past three years from the date of your application. The only exception is military personnel who have served abroad
Successful applicants will be required to complete vetting prior to commencing in their role. This will include a full background check and financial disclosure
Your appointment will be dependent upon successfully passing our medical checks which will include a drugs test. Hair and urine samples will be sent to a laboratory for substance abuse screening and a hearing and spirometry tests will also be done. Individuals who are unable to provide a hair sample for religious reasons may instead just provide a urine sample
Prior to receiving a formal offer, you will be required to pass a fitness test where you need to be able to run the bleep test to a level of 5.4
Your application would be unsuccessful if you have tattoos on your face, neck or hands which are deemed offensive. All tattoos will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis
Piercings are allowed but would need to be removed during training and service if deemed hazardous
Your nails must be to a functional length that do not interfere with your duties
You will need to provide references to cover your last five years of employment and education
You will be required to work on a rota which covers weekends, nights, and bank holidays
Shifts can differ depending on the team you work in, but a typical shift includes two mornings, two evenings, and two nights followed by rest days, known as a six on, four off schedule
The morning shift is from 7:00am until 3:00pm
The evening shift is from 3:00pm until 11:00pm
The night shift is from 11:00pm until 7:00am
You will have a probation period of two years and after completion, you can apply to move into specialist areas such as firearms, dog handling and drones
You will be granted 25 days of annual leave plus bank holidays (shift dependent). You also have the option to purchase additional days of annual leave
This is a three-year programme with both on and off the job learning allowing you to gain a fully funded degree in Professional Policing Practice whilst working and earning as a police constable for Nottinghamshire Police.
Programme plan:

You’ll then be under the tutorship of an experienced officer for 10 weeks, learning how to apply the theory learnt from the classroom in practical scenarios out in public
As part of the programme, you will join the response team to learn how to handle fast-paced frontline policing, responding to several incidents and making quick decisions under pressure
You’ll also join a neighbourhood policing team to learn how to build strong community relationships, prevent crime through visibility and engagement and work closely with local partners and residents to improve neighbourhood safety
You’ll be given three assignments per semester to complete. These are mainly assessment based and will be assigned by university lecturers who will attend Headquarters
Some virtual learning will also take place throughout the programme
After three years, you will qualify as a police constable. After those three years you can then decide if you would like to progress into other specialist areas
You will also be awarded with a Level 6 degree in Professional Policing Practice
