Being a victim of crime can be an upsetting and traumatic experience, Nottinghamshire Police take all reports of burglary seriously.

What happens next?

An officer will attend and speak to you about your report. The officer will be responsible for investigating your crime, they will identify possible forensic opportunities to bring the offender to justice.

Evidence Preservation

A Crime Scene Investigator (CSI) may attend to check for forensic evidence.
What you can do:

• Leave it - Do not touch the evidence/items and leave them alone (if possible)
• Cover it - If there is a risk of evidence being destroyed by weather conditions or there is no ability to control it from being touched/trodden on
• Move it - As a last resort, move it (if possible) to a safe location where it is accessible for CSI and it cannot be disturbed further, Wear gloves or a barrier whilst doing so to prevent adding further fingerprints to the item

What you can do:

There are some steps you can do to protect your property, these include:

• Ensuring doors and windows and left locked – especially in the summer when the warmer weather leads to opportunistic “walk in” burglaries
• Ensuring your valuables are not left in view of open windows and doors
• Using timer switches for lights at night when you are away from your address
• Installing outdoor flood lighting to deter prowlers
